The Β£5,000 Mistake Hiding in Your Old Slurry Pit (And How To Fix It Before Inspectors Show Up)
May 07, 2025
Let’s not dance around it.
If your slurry pit’s older than your son’s first quad bike — it’s probably not compliant anymore.
You might not see it. You might not want to deal with it.
But I’ll tell you what we do see every week:
Cracked concrete.
Outdated liners.
Overflow that runs into a ditch you forgot about.
And guess what?
That’s exactly what an inspector sees, too.
Only they don’t hand out advice — they hand out fines. Or worse, they flag your eligibility for grants.
π What’s Actually Changing in 2025?
You’ve probably heard about the NVZ rules shifting. Maybe someone at the co-op mentioned it, or you’ve had a flyer from the government that looked more like a maths exam than something helpful.
Here’s the deal in plain Welsh logic:
- Your slurry store must hold a set number of days' storage, depending on your type of livestock.
- The construction must meet specific regulations. That means: no cracks, no leakage, and definitely no seepage to nearby watercourses.
- You’ll need evidence that it’s up to standard. “It’s always been fine” doesn’t cut it anymore.
One bad inspection and you could be staring down a £5,000+ rebuild — or worse, grants and payments frozen while they “review your eligibility.”
β οΈ The Common Signs You’re at Risk
You don’t need a drone or a clipboard to figure this out. Just take a walk after a heavy rain. Here’s what to look for:
- Cracks in concrete – especially around seams, corners or joints. Water finds a way.
- Dark or soft spots on earth banks or liners – these often mean seepage.
- Pooling water anywhere near the store – might be runoff or something more serious.
- Rusting or bowing steel – common in old tanks that haven’t had proper inspection in years.
- Missing compliance records – no drawings, specs or maintenance logs? That’s a red flag.
And if you think you’re okay because “it’s been fine for years” — that’s the most dangerous mindset of all.
π§° What To Actually Do About It
Don’t wait until you’re reacting under pressure. Be the farmer who plans ahead.
Here’s how we recommend tackling this:
STEP 1: SELF-CHECK
Grab our free Slurry Compliance Self-Check Tool.
It’s a straight-talking checklist you can use this afternoon. No fluff. Just clear “pass/fail” markers.

STEP 2: BOOK A FREE SITE VISIT
We’ll come out. Walk the site with you.

STEP 3: FIX WHAT MATTERS (ONLY WHAT MATTERS)
We’re not in the business of digging holes for the fun of it.
If you need a new lined lagoon — we’ll build it.
If you just need patchwork + updated drainage — we’ll tell you.
You get the right fix, not the expensive one.
π§ What’s at Stake?
This isn’t just about following the rules.
It’s about protecting everything you’ve built — your stock, your land, your ability to keep going without extra stress, red tape, or cost.
One crack. One inspector. One bad winter.
That’s all it takes to lose it all.
Be smart. Be early. Be ready.
Start with the free checklist or book the visit.
Either way — get your site sorted before the clipboard brigade knocks.
